The engine is the most expensive and complex part of your VW. Regular services and maintenance are the keys to a healthy engine. Without them, engine parts will wear out, and engine problems will develop. At your VW dealership in Waipahu, HI, we can fix any problem for you. These are just a few of the engine issues we can repair.

3 Engine Problems You Should Always Fix at Your VW Dealership

Timing Chain Problems

The timing chain links the camshaft at the top of the engine with the crankshaft at the bottom. The movement of the chain synchronizes several different engine components. Timing is essential for engine processes, and the chain enables the valves to open and close at the correct time relative to the movement of the pistons. A timing chain usually lasts 80,000 to 120,000 miles before it needs replacement.
The chain fits into teeth that allow it to move at high speed. An old or damaged chain can slip a tooth, and this will seriously affect engine timing. A timing problem can lead to engine misfiring, and you’ll usually hear a rattling sound from the damaged chain. If the chain breaks, your engine will stop. We’ll examine your chain and replace it if necessary.

Worn Alternator

The alternator generates electrical power for your car’s systems. It spins at high speed to produce energy, which is converted into DC for the electrical system. On average, an alternator will work for at least eight years. When an alternator gets too old, it will gradually produce less electricity.
Since your car’s systems depend on electricity, a gradual reduction in electricity supply will become noticeable. Your car will develop electrical glitches, like a radio that suddenly shuts down or a moon roof that refuses to open. Starting difficulties can also develop as the alternator will supply less power to your battery. The check battery light will illuminate as a warning that something is wrong. We’ll test your alternator and install a new one if necessary.

Poor Acceleration

When you step on the gas, you expect your engine to almost leap forward. If your engine is struggling to accelerate, our technicians will need to investigate. Several issues can cause poor acceleration, including a fuel-rich engine, damaged cylinders, or a blocked fuel filter. Other potential issues include clogged fuel injectors or a blocked catalytic converter.

Sensors in your engine will detect any problem with your acceleration. These sensors will inform your car’s computer of the problem. We’ll connect your car’s computer to our diagnostic system to identify the error code. Once we know the exact problem, we’ll repair it.

Problems with an engine will get worse over time. Call our service department today at Tony Volkswagen.
